"Private Dancer" - a Disco ball, display turntable, video projection, speakers
Selina Trepp asked 2007 CDF Lab Artist Ayako Kato for a private dance. Trepp asked Kato to create a solo dance performance based on Tina Turner's "Private Dancer". The idea not being for Kato to illustrate the song, or to copy Tina's moves, but to find a form that is true to Kato's interpretation of this situation and this song, that is true to Kato's sensibilities. Trepp asked Kato to engage in a format she is not familiar with, with music she would not choose, and to let Trepp film the result. The piece was performed only once, recorded in a single static take, and is unedited other than the looping point. The resulting video is projected onto a large crashed disco ball, sitting on the floor, still in motion, slowly rotating. The video is sprayed throughout the space fractured into hundreds of projections moving across the surfaces. The audio consists of the sound created by Kato's performance, her breath, her feet, her body.

Josh Berman is a cornetist, composer and presenter living in Chicago. Performing on the cornet, he has collaborated with many of the great improvisers from Chicago and abroad, including: Fred Lonberg-Holm, Ab Baars, Guillermo Gregorio, Jeff Parker, Tobias Delius and Robert Barry. He has also performed as a member of Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra, Ken Vandermark's Crisis Ensemble and Jeb Bishop's Lucky 7s. He is co-leader of Chicago Luzern Exchange, whose debut on Delmark Records, "Several Lights", was chosen as one of the top ten local releases of 2005 in the Chicago Reader, and received three and a half stars in Downbeat. He composes for and leads the Josh Berman Quartet. As a member of many ensembles, he has toured widely in the US, Canada and Europe.
Jason Roebke and Ayako Kato (Art Union Humanscape) have been creating interdisciplinary, improvisational works since 1998. Recently, their improvisations have been a laboratory for developing presence as artists in the performance space. The performances contain fewer and fewer events and focus intensely on how they as artists can create spaces for imagination through energy and existence. They investigate the idea, not of object creation, but of the ability of artists to provoke the imagination simply though existence.
